Glacier & Wildlife Explorer Tour
This tour offers everything you came to see!

Portage Glacier Cruise

Just 50 miles south of Anchorage visitors can take an unforgettable journey to one of Alaska's most famous glaciers.
Hundreds of years ago, Portage Glacier spanned the entire valley and was some 14 miles long. Once part of what is now five distinct glaciers, today Portage Glacier spans 6 miles and is only accessible by boat or air.
On the Portage Glacier Cruise visitors will be able to get within 300 feet of the glacier's face. Listen for the unmistakable rumbling of a fissure, and wait for the movement of excitement
when a huge block of ice crashes dramatically into the lake.

Motor Vessel Ptarmigan Highlights

Board the MV Ptarmigan for a one-hour guided cruise to a relic from the Ice Age.
  • MV Ptarmigan is the only boat operating on Portage Lake
  • Fully enclosed, heated cabin comfortably seats 200 people
  • Expansive windows for enhanced viewing
  • Topside observation deck offers a great vantage point for watching the glacier "calve," and for visitors to enjoy the fresh air
  • Operates on national forest service lands of the Chugach National Forest and is operated under a special-use permit from the USDA Forest Service
  • The MV Ptarmigan's sound system cannot be heard from the shore, ensuring the preservation of this naturally peaceful setting for wildlife and other visitors
  • Hull designed for safety in ice-filled waters
  • Operates daily mid-May through mid-September

Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center

At the 140-acre Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center visitors can view native Alaskan wildlife such as bear, reindeer, moose, and lynx in their natural habitat. The center provides educational programs to promote its mission to provide refuge for orphaned, injured and ill animals-those that can’t survive in the wild.

Tour over 200 acres of natural habitat.
